Portrait of a Girl in a Fur Coat

by: Stephen E. Scott

Stephen Scott is a Canadian painter whose work has always been guided by intuition and emotional depth. He began painting at twenty, drawn not by deliberate choice but by an inner pull toward creativity and the quiet, resonant places that shaped his early landscape practice.

A defining moment came during travels in Morocco in 1972, where the immersive experience of North Africa clarified his commitment to a life in art. Scott later studied at the Ontario College of Art and completed a Fine Arts degree at Mount Allison University, followed by a Master’s in Art Therapy at Concordia University. His artistic evolution and philosophy are explored in Surface Reflections by Robert Barriault.

Scott’s work remains rooted in traditional observational painting, which he values for its directness. In recent years, this foundation has supported a more expressive approach, one that seeks to reveal emotional and preconscious currents and the emergence of myth, metaphor, and symbol within representational art.
