Bio

Headshot Photo by Emily Rioux of Craft NB

Darcy Hunter is a quilt artist residing in Fredericton. She creates original art landscapes with fabric and stitch, using her sewing machine as her paint brush. Her representational fibre art works are inspired by her love of the natural world and evoke the colour, movement, and sense of place of her surroundings. Her work can be found in many private collections all over North America. Darcy is a part-time elementary school teacher. She loves teaching and has shown her commitment to the art community through classes, speaking engagements, and her publication of numerous magazine articles.

Residency Project

I have completed 2 residencies: one at Nashwaak Valley School, and the other at Barker's Point Elementary. My artwork concentrates on the beauty found in nature and natural landscapes. I begin my residency by having an exhibition of my work, including a powerpoint sharing my process with the students. My textile art is created using a collage technique, and I will begin their exploration by instructing each class on paper collaged landscapes using magazines. Once every student has completed a paper collaged landscape, I will meet with each class in grades 4 and 5 and we will collaborate to create quilt block that represents their school community (which can be easily tied to their curriculum outcomes). At the same time, I will begin a stitching club on their lunch hour and have 2 volunteers from each class in grades 4 and 5 attend. They will learn the basics of hand-stitching. These students will stitch the class quilt blocks into a school quilt that can be displayed. A celebration and unveiling the quilt is a great way to end the project. The paper collaged landscapes can also be included for a school-wide exhibition. I am hoping to help the students to develop their creativity and encourage them that an art practice can be meditative and fulfilling, bringing them happiness and peace in this busy world.

Teaching Experience

I am currently a supply teacher for the Anglophone West School District in the Fredericton and surrounding area. I have also taught numerous workshops to share my craft and passion for my art.
