Bio
Roseann Martin is survivor of the residential and day school system as well as a survivor of the 60's scoop. She follows the traditional red path, learning, sharing and conducting ceremony. She is a pipe carrier and traditional grandmother. Roseann has spent the past 35 years relearning the Mi'kmaq language and cultural crafting practices such as bead work, leather work and regalia making.
Residency Project
For a residency project, I would like to teach students about traditional medicines, smudging, songs and drumming, and Mi'kmaq language and culture in general. I have crafting skills that I can share with students to create items that correspond with the teachings such as medicine wheels and mandalas.
Teaching Experience
I have partnered with Anglophone North School District on a number of projects over the past three years. I have worked with classrooms in elementary, middle and high school on various topics ranging from music to residential schools. I am utilized as an Elder for ASD-N blanket exercises and as a part of an Elder's sounding board to help guide Indigenous education in ASD-N. I've been a member of the Native Women's Association. I also support schools in the Gaspe area in their cultural and reconciliation learning.
